Soften yeast in warm water. In a large bowl combine sugar, shortening, salt; stir in milk that has cooled to luke warm. Add softened yeast, egg and 2 cups flour. Beat well. Gradually add remaining flour as needed to make soft dough. Cover. Let rise in warm place, till doubled, about 1 1/2 hours. Punch down. Turn out on lightly floured surface. Shape as clover leaf or orange swirls. Bake at 400° for 10 -12 minutes. Makes 24 hot rolls.
