Special Features: For two small beach towns on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, neighbors include First Lady Michelle Obama, the Governor of the State of Maryland, Maryland’s Senators, County and Town officials and over three hundred residents, all of whom have contributed their favorite recipes to “Taste of the Beaches.” From the “Obama Family Chili” recipe to seven-year old Nick Reynolds’ “Indoor Smores” recipe from the Kids in the Kitchen section, this cookbook offers varied and scrumptious recipes for your enjoyment. Local artists contributed stunning photographs of the Chesapeake Bay for tab dividers, all of which also contain a tour guide to our waterfront communities featuring places to visit, shop and dine, marinas, museums, and overnight accommodations.

Description: “Taste of the Beaches” is one of ten finalists in the 2009 contest. The beautiful wrap-around cover begins a fascinating journey for readers through the culture, history, and charm of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach, contiguous Chesapeake Bay waterfront communities in Calvert County, Maryland. Situated in close proximity to Washington, D. C., Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland, visitors enjoy our casual, always hospitable and gracious lifestyle. We hope that you will be inspired to visit us soon and experience first-hand what we are so fortunate to enjoy every day. These scrumptious recipes offer a variety of dishes sure to please your family and friends. Many include ingredients from our bountiful Chesapeake Bay and from our local farmers.

• 1 large onion, chopped
• 1/4 tsp ground basil
• 1 green pepper, chopped
• 1 T. chili powder
• Several cloves of garlic, chopped
• Several tomatoes, depending on size, chopped
• 1 lb. ground turkey or beef
• 3 T. red wine vinegar
• 1/4 tsp ground cumin
• 1 can red kidney beans
• 1/4 tsp ground oregano
• 1 T. olive oil
• 1/4 tsp ground turmeric

Sauté onions, green pepper and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add ground meat and brown. Combine spices together into a mixture, then add to ground meat. Add red wine vinegar. Add tomatoes and let simmer, until tomatoes cook down. Add kidney beans and cook for a few minutes. Serve over white rice. Garnish with grated cheddar cheese, onions and sour cream.
