Special Features: The Jersey Girls of Smith Mountain Lake is a club consisting of women who are transplants from Nj to the Smith Mt. Lake area. Shore To Please Recipes gives a nod to our home state in the title and contains 350 delicious recipes contributed by our members. You will find a wide variety of ethnic dishes with anything from Pierogi to Easy Italian Cheesecake and Mexican Lasagna. The Smith Mountain Lake Crab Cakes are not to missed either! Many recipes have been handed down from our mothers, grandmothers or other family members. Many include notes or tips for cooking ahead, freezing, etc.

Description: Our cookbook is truly unique. It is specifically customized from cover to cover showcasing shelter animals. The cover features pictures of rescued shelter dogs & cats displayed against a soft, muted yellow background. While our book contains all the usual categories from appetizers to dessert, there is a special section with over 20 recipes for home made dog food & doggie treats. The book's category dividers have been customized with a picture of either a dog or a cat that has been adopted from a local shelter. Below each picture is the pet's name and adoption date. The dividers, as well as various recipe pages, include whimsical drawings of cats, dogs or related items. The artwork was custom done by several of our members.

Funds raised support: All Profits from our cookbook will be distributed between our local Humane Societies. "Saving just one pet won't change the world....but surely, the world will change for that one pet."

Maryland Crab Soup
By: Marlene Truesdell

  • 1 c. onion, chopped
  • olive oil
  • 2 (14.5-oz) cans diced tomatoes (low salt)
  • 5 c. beef broth (low salt)
  • 1 (12-oz.) bag vegetables for soup
  • 1 c. frozen corn kernels
  • 1 c. carrots, sliced
  • 1 c. celery, sliced
  • 2 med. potatoes, cubed small
  • 2-4 T. Old Bay Seasoning (start with 2, I use lots)
  • 2 T. brown sugar
  • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 c. sweet chili sauce (I use Franks sweet chili
  • sauce)
  • Hot sauce (opt.) (Franks hot sauce leaves no bitter
  • aftertaste)
  • 1 lb. fresh or frozen crab meat (NOT canned)

Saute onion in a small amount of olive oil in a large soup pot then add everything Except the crab meat. Bring to a boil, turn down and simmer for 10 minutes. Add crab meat (if you have crab claws, throw them in too), cover and simmer 10 minutes longer. Serve hot with saltine type crackers. Some like slliced cabbage added but I prefer the celery. Adjust the spices to your taste. Use low salt wherever you can since the Old Bay Seasoning has a lot of salt. One time I didn't have quite enough crab so I added about 1/2 pound of medium shrimp...worked great! Note: This actually tastes better the second day...once the flavors have a chance to blend.
